Higher Folds Community Centre & Nursery

Key Achievements

  • Saved £1,000 in energy costs to reinvest back into local services

Higher Folds Community Centre & Nursery is at the heart of its local community in Wigan, supporting 25,000 people each year through food provision, early years education, adult learning and more.

With support through the Energy Resilience Fund, the centre has improved its building, reduced energy costs and created a warmer, more welcoming space for local people. Higher Folds lowered the ceiling in two rooms, replaced lighting and installed solar panels. The Fund has also allowed Higher Folds to extend the lease on their building from Wigan Council for another 25 years.

“It’s a lot brighter in here – even though the roof’s been lowered, it’s a lot brighter, it looks a lot newer and it’s reassuring.”

In this film, the team share how investment in energy efficiency improvements has helped create a warmer, brighter community space while reducing costs by around £1,000 a month – savings that are now being reinvested into local services.

“It’s enabled us to invest in furniture for the grocery, and more stock that we buy ourselves to resell, and it’s allowed us to invest in the nursery which makes it more attractive to children on the estate. Beyond the savings, we always invest back into the community centre.”
